Sliding out of the Central Coast, NSW, indie group Suede Effect brings
with them a liquid blend of silky-smooth psych-rock and punk attitude.
Suede Effect’s newest EP, Allsorts, fits its name, painting a messy
picture of emotional conflict through a pensive mix of funk, psychedelic
tunes, and punk rock.
Throughout the album, the band stays true to its psychedelic roots with
tracks like Mellow Nights and Scarlett Moon, before breaking out into
their more experimental side and blending genres. Seeing Red and
Rambunctious take on a unique blend of funk and punk rock that makes
for a punchy yet satisfying experience. Tropical Punch and Stuck
balance the listening experience, serving as a transition between the
faster and harder sounds of the start of the album and the slow silkiness
of the end. Stuck, in particular, makes interesting use of surf rock,
modified to fit the band’s overall vibe, and makes for a sparkly and
dreamy experience.
Allsorts invites the listener to experience the chaos and uncertainty that
the lyrics convey. Themes such as confidence, insecurity, intimacy,
detachment, and identity are viewed through different emotional lenses
throughout the album, evoking varied thoughts and feelings around the
same subjects. In this way, the album feels introspective and functions
as a mirror, allowing the listener to look inward at how they relate to the
ideas presented in the music.
Despite its introspective nature, the album remains very pleasant on the
ear. Whether you’re listening for emotional reflection or simply to enjoy
well-crafted music, Allsorts offers something to appreciate. An
introspective and deeply unique experience, this EP is well worth a
listen.
