Holding A Candle For The Awkward Spaces
Appreciation and growth were two of the most defining factors in why I became a music writer. Early on, I had significant levels of the former, largely because of my parents’ collection of carefully cultivated cassettes and CDs. These physical roots of technology helped formulate the branches of my initial, beloved teachings within genres like country, folk, rock, and alternative. I then carried that knowledge into the flashpoint of my early teens, where those initial sparks began the fiery latter expansion of a journey into musical self-discovery that’s lasted to the present day.
For a white kid from small-town New York State, this public writing trek (now into the digital and vinyl record realm) has helped soothe the need I’d never found locally for sharing mutual musical infatuations. It’s also aided me in exploring other cultural backdrops, like hip-hop, electronic, instrumental, hard rock, and various conceptual tapestries. Being in freelance music journalism for years has made these treasures even more exciting, because instead of always having to find gems, proof of my writing skills has musicians often bringing me their own bejeweled creative projects.
That aspect (and this wonderful Substack community) is what first brought my orbit into overlap with Australian singer-songwriter giddy. Her debut album, songs for awkward spaces, drops later this year with an unlikely creative backstory. Just a few years ago giddy wasn’t a musician at all, but after taking her mom (who has a history in the art) to a singing class, she found herself hooked. Picking up a ukulele she named Lorien and incorporating her previous knack for poetry into songwriting, giddy began creating/performing the songs that form the heartbeat of awkward spaces.
