Melbourne-based band FINN has quietly built one of the most distinctive catalogues in Australia’s independent roots and Americana scene. Since forming in 2008, the band has released ten albums, steadily earning recognition for their thoughtful songwriting, rich vocal harmonies, and warm, organic sound. Led by brothers Mark and Luke Finn on guitars and vocals, the group is joined by longtime bandmates Terry Hart (multi-instrumentalist), Jeremy Staples (bass), and Daniel Angelini (drums), forming a collaborative unit known for music that feels equally at home in the studio or on stage. Their tenth album, Control, arriving Friday, August 7, 2026, marks a new level of focus and emotional clarity for the band. Across eleven carefully crafted songs, FINN explores themes of memory, faith, friendship, loss, and the quiet persistence of human connection. “Control is a record about learning to live with uncertainty,” the band explains. “The songs explore friendships, loss, faith, and the quiet resilience that keeps people moving forward even when the path isn’t clear. At its heart, it’s an album about connection and the belief that the people we hold onto can still give meaning to the journey.” Musically, Control distills the elements that have long defined the band’s sound—acoustic guitars, banjo, piano, and layered vocal harmonies—while expanding the palette in subtle ways. Warm organ textures weave through several tracks, while songs like “River Running Through” open into cinematic soundscapes. The reflective “Angel Eyes” gradually evolved into a hymn-like arrangement during recording, while the blues-tinged “Old Friend” captures one of the album’s most intimate moments. Though far removed from the American South, Mark and Luke gravitated toward the expressive guitar work and melodic sensibility of artists such as Mark Knopfler, JJ Cale and Eric Clapton, while also drawing inspiration from celebrated Australian songwriters including Paul Kelly and Nick Cave. Over the course of ten albums, FINN has developed their own blend of folk, Americana, blues, rock, and melodic pop. Their 2024 release The Waterfall—an ambitious eighteen-song collection—showcased the full breadth of the band’s musical palette. Where that album explored the wide scope of their sound, Control turns inward, distilling their approach into something more focused and reflective. The band’s songwriting process remains rooted in simplicity and collaboration. Most FINN songs begin with an acoustic guitar, a melody, and a lyric that reveals its emotional center early on, before arrangements gradually take shape through the band’s collective instincts and musical chemistry. Recording sessions took place at Woodstock Studios in Melbourne with longtime member Terry Hart, who also serves as the band’s producer and engineer.
