About the Artist

Formed in 2024 and have since been thriving on the West Coast, Perth/Boorloo indie act FREE AVIARY have been consistently building momentum. Building on a stellar reputation as one of WA’s most engaging emerging bands, the four-piece today celebrate the release of their latest track: ‘HOLD MY MIND’. Following on from the release of their debut self-titled EP earlier this year, ‘HOLD MY MIND’ is a fitting expansion of the FREE AVIARY sound. Instant groove and melody comes together with self-aware and nuanced lyricism, a songwriting knack that the band has found themselves catching the rhythm of with ease. Together they created the song at Hercules Street Studio in Sydney, working with engineer Daniel Vandenberg and producer Glenn Goldsmith to bring their ideas to life in the studio. For the band, working in an iconic space such as this studio, surrounded by inspiration and encouragement, helped them capture a fresh chemistry that drives ‘HOLD MY MIND’. “Rather than recording to a metronome, the track was performed live in the studio, with the drums captured in a single take. This became the foundation for the rest of the recording, with vocals, bass, guitars and keys layered afterwards. The track was recorded entirely to 2-inch analogue tape, helping capture the raw, organic character and energy of the live performance. We wanted the recording to feel like you were in the room with us rather than hearing a perfectly polished studio performance.” FREE AVIARY Of the track’s themes, FREE AVIARY took a look at the breakdown of a relationship and what the aftermath can ultimately bring. Navigating rocky emotional territory during such a difficult time is one that many listeners could relate to – ‘HOLD MY MIND’ chooses resolve and acceptance, finding glimmers of hope and optimism in the dark. “‘Hold My Mind’ captures the emotional aftermath of leaving a relationship on mutual terms. You both know that ending things is for the best, but that doesn’t make walking away any easier. When the hurt sets in, there’s an instinct to turn that pain into anger — to become cold, resentful, or convince yourself that you should hate the person, even when they haven’t really given you a reason to. The song explores that internal battle between wanting to hold onto the anger and recognising that there’s nothing to gain from it. Ultimately, Hold My Mind is about choosing self-love and compassion over resentment. It’s about accepting that you can care for someone, grieve what you had, and still move forward without needing that person to feel whole or content.” FREE AVIARY
