VAN RAVEN
VAN RAVEN is the solo project of Launceston based singer-songwriter and producer Denise van den Berg. Her sound sits between alternative rock and grunge pop, mixing gritty guitars, catchy melodies and a low, distinctive voice with lyrics that are often darker than they first appear. Her songs explore love, lust, identity and the nature of being human, with metaphysical and spiritual ideas often hiding underneath more personal stories. She likes songs that can mean one thing on the surface and something completely different underneath. Denise writes, records and produces her own music, taking a hands-on approach to everything from the songs themselves to the visual world around them. After writing her first song in November 2024, she completed a Certificate IV in Music in 2025 and began releasing music independently. Her second single, “Where Did All the Humans Go?”, received airplay on Hobart’s Edge Radio 99.3FM and Huon & Kingston FM 95.3, as well as Launceston’s City Park Radio FM 103.7. The song takes a swipe at auto-tune, digital filters and the increasingly artificial way people present themselves online. Backed in the studio and on stage by musician Matthew Osborne, known for playing bass and vocals in Distillery, The Far Cues and Chiseld, VAN RAVEN is now working towards her debut album, SECRETS. Her next single, “Like a Secret”, marks the beginning of the album’s release cycle in 2026. Song Info: “Like a Secret” is a DIY project and was recorded and mixed in my living room. It's about the tension between two people who are strongly attracted to each other but don’t act on it. The lyrics focus on the physical and emotional pull between them, while a deeper layer touches on love as a spiritual experience and the idea of finding something divine in another person. Musically, the song builds with the same sense of tension. Heavy, driving guitar riffs sit beneath low, intimate vocals before opening into a bigger, melodic chorus. The arrangement continues to build throughout the track, reaching its heaviest and most explosive point in the bridge.
