Sometimes the last journey home happens without leaving the room. ‘One Tree Plain’ follows an ageing stockman nearing the end of his life and the carer beside him, as memory carries him back across the Australian landscape to the place he still calls home. Co-written by Bruce Mackay, Anthony Snape and Belinda Brooks, the cinematic country-folk ballad pairs intimate storytelling with warm, spacious production.
Released 9 October ahead of National Carers Week (11-17 October), One Tree Plain is about presence, dignity and the quiet act of staying when there is nothing left to fix. Rather than dwelling on death, it holds onto landscape, memory, identity and connection. The song draws on Brooks’ own work with carers, grief, bereavement and end-of-life support, giving its story a lived authenticity while keeping its emotional heart universal.
