‘It doesn’t count when it’s your friends’ is a song about growing up deeply religious and slowly coming to terms with my bisexuality. As a teenager, I went to church every weekend, but with equal dedication, I went to parties, drank vodka cruisers, and kissed my girlfriends. The song captures the feeling of being pulled between two worlds - the faith I grew up with, and the person I was becoming. At its heart, it’s about the confusion, shame, and freedom that can come with growing up and trying to figure out who you are. I was privileged enough to work with my friend Tay Blunt (FVNERAL) who produced the song and helped me capture the campy/rock vibes and very specific feelings I was searching for.
