Hip-hop collides with punk, indie and emo-rock, as Ghanaian-Australian artist Kwasi explores the darkness and vulnerability of his internal conflicts through his alter ego, the MISFIT, on his debut album ‘Outstanding MISFIT’, out now. With a run of singles behind him, ‘Outstanding MISFIT’ marks Kwasi’s debut album and builds on an already stacked discography that has earned him international and industry attention. Kwasi’s distinct hip-hop punk sound has seen him supporting and collaborating with artists like Genesis Owusu, Illy and 360. Electric and volatile, ‘Outstanding MISFIT’ blurs alternative hip-hop with punk, indie and emo, driven by pulsing blown-out drums and distorted guitars. Kwasi’s restless vocals shift from intimate to manic and explosive, mirroring the interchange and unpredictability between himself and the MISFIT. Across the album, he rides the edge of overstimulation, creating a ruckus without letting the noise overwhelm the vulnerability underneath. Unfolding across 14 tracks, ‘Outstanding MISFIT’ is a conceptual story of an underdog becoming an anti-hero. The MISFIT is Kwasi’s alter ego, with the album following their tension as he tries to stand out, find his identity and navigate his internal conflict, until the line between the two becomes increasingly difficult to find. Kwasi carefully yet abrasively layers the pieces of his story through each track as he moves from standing out to becoming outstanding. ‘KAMIKWASI’ kickstarts the album with a heavy beat and abrasive punk, immediately launching the full-throttle energy. ‘UPPERS’ pushes further into manic spoken-word rap and spatial EDM. ‘BREATHE’ carries tension through pulsing beats, dark indie guitars and repeated breathing sounds that offer a strange calm beneath the noises. The mood shifts with ‘Gold On Her Tongue’, a hypnotic blend of trap, hip-hop and R&B centered on attraction, before ‘Tears and Toyotas’ leans into nostalgia and acceptance as he reminisces on the past. Closing with ‘On Everything’, Kwasi offers a stripped-back reflection of friendship, letting go and freedom, ending the album not with a resolution but leaving him ready for whatever waits beyond the MISFIT. As Kwasi explains: “The MISFIT is all of it: the confidence, the chaos, the mistakes, the vulnerability, the good and the bad. I don’t think the story ends with everything figured out, because I definitely haven’t figured everything out. I think I’ve just become more comfortable with who I am, and maybe with the idea that I don’t need to fit perfectly anywhere.” On Saturday, October 31, Village Cinemas Rivoli will become the setting for ‘KWASI PRESENTS: THE SCORE — OUTSTANDING MISFIT’, an immersive live cinema experience built around the world of ‘Outstanding MISFIT’. Across the night, an original short film will move seamlessly into live performances from Kwasi and his band, blurring the line between screen and stage as one continuous story unfolds around the audience.
