Zach Stephenson (he/him) - best known as the singer of acclaimed and much-loved indie-band Hockey Dad - has released the new single ‘Broke My Jaw’, the second track lifted from his recently announced debut solo album I Needed To Hear Me Say It out October 30 via radius (Armlock, dust, The Belair Lip Bombs).
A bright, sunny track with melodies perfect for the turn of summer, ‘Broke My Jaw’ conversely pulls from his experiences of what it takes to write a great song or album, and the hard-to-avoid phase of “taking it out on the road and having the shit kicked out of you by touring and the industry at large.” It was a late entry to the writing of I Needed To Hear Me Say It, with its opening lyrics references the origins of album track ‘Ode To The Echo’, the chorus melody coming to him in the shower and needing to run out to get it down. “It just possessed me out of nowhere,” he shares.
‘Broke My Jaw’ follows his debut solo single ‘In N Out’, which started out as a meditation guide to lean on during panic attacks or anxiety, cyclical and rhythmic to mirror the steady breathing needed to get through.
