About this Song

Best Friend” is about finding a love that feels so complete that, even if the rest of the world took everything away, you would still feel like you had everything because you had that person. The song came from a very personal experience of feeling like I had no one and being judged or rejected for who I was and the relationship I had chosen. But instead of writing a song about the people who were against us, I wanted to write about what I had gained. I had found someone who wasn't just my lover, but my best friend. The idea can mean something different to everyone. It can be about racism, homophobia, cultural or religious differences, family expectations, or simply loving someone that other people don't understand. At its core, it's about choosing each other when the outside world says you shouldn't, and realizing that if you have that one person beside you, you haven't really lost anything. “Best Friend” is one of the most personal songs I've written. A huge part of the inspiration came from my Nan and Pop. I always looked up to their relationship because they weren't just deeply in love, they were genuinely best friends. That idea stayed with me and became something I wanted for my own life. I think a lot of people know what it's like to have their relationship judged by people who have no place in it. It might be family who don't approve because of religion or culture, people who don't accept gay love or interracial relationships, or even complete strangers who feel entitled to have an opinion about who someone loves. I've seen so many people have to defend something that should never have needed defending in the first place. At the end of the day, who you love is nobody else's goddamn business. If you have someone who truly loves you, sees you and chooses you, that's what matters. There is a very special vocal in the song is actually my Nan's voice from one of our conversations over the years. I wanted her in the song because her relationship with my Pop was one of the earliest examples I had of what I believe real love can look like. She always told me that people will never stop judging you so why worry about it? This world gets to me sometimes but she helps me stay grounded. The song also comes from a much darker part of my life. There were times when I felt like I had absolutely nobody, and things got to a point where my parents literally set my belongings on fire. My guitar was even thrown down the stairs so when I say, “They can set all I own on fire,” that line isn't a metaphor. I know what it feels like to have things taken away from you, and that's what makes the idea behind the song so powerful to me: if I lost everything but still had you, I wouldn't feel like I'd lost anything at all. But I didn't want the song to be about revenge or resentment. I wanted it to be about realizing that even if I had nothing left, I would still have everything if I had the person I love beside me.
