‘July’ is a deeply personal reflection on the shame and guilt I carried after being betrayed by an ex partner. While writing it, I found myself trying to step inside their mind and understand how someone could hurt another person in that way. For a while, the experience left me feeling damaged and uncertain about love and trust. Writing this song became part of my healing process. It helped me realise that no matter how much you care for someone, you can’t change who they are. There’s a sense of acceptance in that notion, even if it came from pain. The song was first created on my vocal looper as a ‘stream of consciousness piece’ and I wanted to preserve that raw, intimate feeling in the final version. Calvin Bennett totally understood the vision and helped bring that emotional honesty to life in the production.
Living on Gadigal land, Katie Reid is a Scottish-Australian singer-songwriter and a hidden gem of Sydney’s Inner West. She crafts heartfelt indie pop music, drawing inspiration from artists such as Maggie Rogers, Holly Humberstone and Kate Bush. Katie earned her stripes as a sought-after backing vocalist for some of Australia’s biggest names, including Guy Sebastian and Christine Anu. Katie shares intimate stories of love, heartbreak and navigating your 20’s as a pisces perfectionist. Katie's most recent release 'Clouds' was met with a warm reception online and a sold out single launch at Yulli's Brews. Katie is currently recording her debut EP, set for release in October 2026.
